Flamboyance

Today's poem, the fifth for National Poetry Writing Month, was inspired by my high school nickname; The Pokey Flamingo. These birds are...a little peculiar. And, I believe, everyone is entitled to a little peculiarity.

Flamboyance

Written 04.05.2022

Long, nimble legs

tiptoe through liquid glass

like two straws

penetrating the aqueous marble.

They slurp up

every blushing hint

of rose-colored brine,

and fill the floating,

cotton candy body above -

rubescent, and

furnished with fulgurant feathers,

that rise further still

into a slender, arching,

serpentine pipette.

Adorned with bright,

lemon eyes,

and an ebony,

filter-feeding nozzle;

These bubblegum-colored

straws and tubes,

with taffy pipettes

and inky nozzles,

filled with the florid fuschia

of far-off lagoons

engender the peculiarity

that is the fine-feathered

flamingo.
